brief history of the British Institute for Chinese Martial Arts
The British Institute for Chinese Martial Arts was founded in 1994 by Alasdair Monteith, who had been studying
martial arts for eighteen years. Mr Monteith, a full-time gymnastics coach, believed there was, and is, a need
to teach Chinese martial arts as a professionally run sport, on the same lines as gymnastics. Since 1995 our teams
have won over 80 medals in competition including 23 gold's and Alasdair Monteith represented Great Britain in the
3rd World Wushu Championships.
In addition to the club's teaching and competition successes, it has also acted as a technical consultant for
Carlton TV and Halifax Building Society advertisements, provided doubles for MTV and for Playstation software,
provided vocal talents for a Levi's commercial, written many articles for the Internet, health, fitness and martial
art publications and acted as a consultant to solicitors.
We run a full-time schedule of classes for adults and children with a team of coaches
fully qualified and insured to teach gymnastics and martial arts. Our coaches teach approximately 150 children
five days a week in six different primary and secondary schools, with more due to start next year.
All of our Club Coaches have trained in Malaysia, China or Singapore and we are constantly
in touch with our opposite numbers in the Far East.

young children in the martial arts
British Institute for Chinese Martial Arts we strive to raise the standards of Wushu for children
by getting them involved in the sport at an early age. We teach the core elements of martial techniques combined
with stretching and strengthening programs to develop co-ordination. Simple games and activities lead on, in time,
to a more formal structure involving gymnastics, body shapes, stances and balances which are a foundation for future
progress in Wushu.
As more and more people become concerned about violence in our community and worried for their children's safety,
the idea of sending them to a martial art class becomes a very attractive option. A popular misconception is that
by the age of eight a child can be trained to become a powerful fighter. This could not be further from the truth,
the first thing we teach is that fighting is for animals. Our training teaches that violence solves nothing in
anyone's life and should only be used in extreme circumstances. It does not command respect and will never make
you rich. "Violent people come to violent ends!"
We recognise that children go through several stages of development. Until the age of seven a child does not
normally develop free and co-ordinated movement. Powers of concentration develop simultaneously and consequently
the performance of wushu movements will be somewhat erratic to start with, they are only achieved through repetition
and with patience from an understanding coach.
All our coaches are qualified to teach by the British Gymnastics Association and BCCMA the official governing
body for Chinese martial arts.
